MetService said this weekend's settled weather is set to change with a front forecast for the South Island on Monday and into Tuesday and moving across the North Island on Tuesday.

Rain's forecast in most regions as the front moves across the country with a heavy rain warning in place in Westland.

MetService said there was also potential for northwesterly gales to become severe in eastern areas ahead of the front.

MetService meteorologist Claire Flynn said southerly winds could also be quite strong, especially about coastal areas.

Showers are expected to clear in the east on Wednesday as the front moves away, though they are expected to linger in northern and western areas, as well as the far south.

"This pattern should persist into Thursday. However, another front approaches the far south on Friday," Ms Flynn said.
