Another sewage spill in Whangarei

21:48 pm on 2 June 2010

There was another rainy day sewage spill in Whangarei on Tuesday.

Whangarei District Council says yesterday's downpour in the city caused up to 2000 cubic metres of sewage diluted by stormwater to overflow from the Hatea pumping station into Whangarei harbour.

The spill was the second in two weeks.

Three new pumps were installed last month to handle flood conditions.

The harbour was already deemed unsafe for shellfish gathering after last week's incident. The council says that that warning now extends for another four weeks.
