Off The Runway: Wellington

Off The Runway is a fashion series about the individual style that defines New Zealand cities.

We hit the streets of Wellington to talk to locals about the stories that make their clothes unique.

Design student Isaac Dalkie is big on recycled clothing and says it’s wasteful to buy clothes and then discard them soon after when they’re no longer on trend.

One of his favourite possessions is a jacket he scored at the Salvation Army, and the rest of his outfit is made up of clothes that he made in his spare time, plus an old pair of pants that belonged to his Dad.

Hand-me-downs were common with the Wellingtonians with everyone scoring a item from their old man.

Kane Laing, who describes his style as utilitarian and practical, wears a leather jacket that used to belong to his father and a handmade shawl from his days volunteering at a school in India.

Laura Johnstone starting wearing her Dad's old Godzilla t-shirt and never gave it back. The recent graduate says, for the most part, she wears a lot of black and falls between the realm of being individual and not trying to break the mold.

“If I had the money and the figure and everything I needed, then I would be dressed to the nines.”
