The human remains located off Desert Road south of Taupō earlier this week have been transported to Auckland for a post mortem.
A team of officers located the remains buried at a site off Rangipo Intake Road on Tuesday, after receiving information that led them to have fears for a person.
Police said the formal identification process is expected to take some time.
