CNMI opposes militarisation of Pagan

13:35 pm on 28 August 2014

Parliamentarians in the Northern Marianas are opposed to US plans to expand military activities on Pagan.

The territory's House Federal and Foreign Affairs Committee is recommending the adoption of a joint resolution requesting the governor to oppose any and all proposed military use of Pagan and oppose any increased military activities in the Northern Islands.

It says a wholesale militarisation planned for Pagan will permanently foil any meaningful chance for resettlement and result in collateral damage.

However, the committee says the CNMI nonetheless values its relationship with the United States.

It says it also respects the Covenant that established the terms and conditions that govern the political relationship.
