A heritage bridge in Cambridge remains partially closed after a truck nearly 15-times heavier than its weight limit drove over it overnight.
The Victoria Street Bridge crosses the Waikato River and was closed just after midnight because of fears it had become unsafe.
The weight limit for vehicles is 3 tonnes and the truck that drove over it weighed 42 tonnes.
Engineers from Waipa District Council began looking at the bridge's structural integrity this morning and said it was unlikely it had been seriously damaged.

One lane has now been reopened but the inspection is continuing.
The other side needs repairs for damage to the rails and footpath.
The council said it was talking to the driver and the company he works for.
