A man has been charged after a road worker was critically injured when a vehicle sped through a work site in Waikato.

Police said a road worker was struck by a speeding white Haval SUV at Dunlop Road, Waharoa, shortly after midday on Thursday.

The road worker suffered critical injuries.

Police said they believed the driver had earlier threatened and assaulted staff at a business before driving off at speed towards the work site.

A 28-year-old man is due to appear in Hamilton District Court on Friday, charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, dangerous driving, threatening to kill, and failing to stop and ascertain injury.
