Deadly suicide bombing in Afghan capital

06:57 am on 9 October 2009

The Taliban has claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing that has killed at least 17 people in the Afghan capital, Kabul.

Afghan officials say a car bomber blew himself up near the Indian embassy in the second attack on the building in just over a year.

In a statement on its website the Taliban says it specifically targeted the embassy.

The statement says the attack was "planned and implemented" outside Afghan borders.

The blast hit at 0827 local time as residents were arriving to work. The BBC quotes an eyewitness as saying the victims were civilians.

Television pictures showed charred vehicles at the site and ambulances speeding to the location.

Kabul has been attacked regularly in recent months, and in July 2008 a suicide bomber rammed a car full of explosives into the gates of the Indian embassy, killing dozens of people and injuring more than 140.

Six Italian soldiers were killed last month in a bomb attack on a military convoy.
