The $37 million building will go up on land already owned by the council, in the Forum North and former RSA precinct.

It is intended to house all the council's staff and services that are currently split over separate sites across Whangārei.

The council has been debating for months whether to build close to its present Forum North site, or move into the CBD.

It also voted today to start negotiations with Canam Construction as the lead contractor for the build.

The company recently completed the Bay of Islands Hospital redevelopment.
