12:47 pm on 5 September 2016

A court in New Caledonia has jailed a teenager for ten years for trying to kill a policeman in Houailou last year.

According to the local newspaper, the court heard that he wanted to kill a policeman to impress his friends.

The gunman, who at the time of the incident was under 18, lay in waiting for nearly an hour for a policeman to come out of the police station.

When he fired at the policeman, the bullet hit his watch and was deflected but still caused life-threatening injuries.

The court sentenced the gunman's brother to 15 years in prison for inciting the attempted killing and gave an eight-year sentence to an accomplice in the attack.
