A 4.7 magnitude earthquake has struck 15km south-east of Seddon, GeoNet says.
It said the quake hit about 6.15pm, at a depth of 15km, and described the shaking as "strong". It was widely felt, from Christchurch to Wellington and the Kapiti Coast.
It was initially described as "moderate" but upgraded later in the evening.
The country has been rocked by aftershocks since the devastating 7.8 magnitude quake on 14 November, which left Kaikōura cut off by road and damaged a number of buildings in Marlborough and Wellington.
