It's a wet and windy start to the school holidays for much of the country.
MetService is warning of heavy rain for the northwest Nelson Ranges.
Meanwhile a heavy rain watch is in force for Southland, Westland, the ranges of eastern Nelson and northern Marlborough, eastern Bay of Plenty, and south of Whangārei, and now includes eastern parts of Dunedin and Clutha about and south of the Otago Peninsula.
A heavy rain watch for Auckland and Northland has now been lifted.
It follows a wet and wild night in which roofs were lifted off buildings and powerlines downed.
In some parts of the region winds gusted to 70km/h.
Upper Northland Island Fire and emergency New Zealand shift manager Craig Daley says there were over 50 weather related call outs.
A strong wind watch is in force for Northland, Great Barrier Island, Coromandel Peninsula, Bay of Plenty and northern Gisborne, also southern Westland and northern Fiordland.
Niwa meteorologist Ben Noll says the unsettled weather will continue through the week.
"There will be some scattered thunder storms that will be possible across Auckland, Northland, the upper part of the North Island more broadly and that will perhaps come back again as we work our way to Wednesday as another maybe potent disturbance makes its way through the region."
