The New Zealand motor racing combination of Jason Richards and Greg Murphy have posted the second fastest time in the opening round of practice for this weekend's Bathurst 1000.

The Holden drivers were just under two tenths of a second behind the Ford pair of Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup, who clocked 2 minutes 07.5975 seconds around the 6.2km Mt Panorama circuit.

Ford Performance Racing's Mark Winterbottom and Steven Richards finished third, more than half a second off the pace.

Reigning series champion and current standings leader Garth Tander, who is partnering five-time Bathurst champion Mark Skaife at the Holden Racing Team, was tenth fastest.
