Nesian Mystik singer Te Awanui Reeder has topped the National Maori Music Awards.

Reeder - lead singer of the hip hop and RnB band - was named the winner of three awards: best Maori male solo artist, best song by a Maori artist and best Maori songwriter.

In total, there were 19 awards presented at a ceremony in Hastings on Friday night.

The best Maori female solo award went to Kirsten Te Rito, who affiliates to Rongomaiwahine and Ngati Kahungunu.

The radio airplay record of the year by a Maori artist in te reo award went to the band 1814.

And the lifetime contribution to Maori music went to two well-known artists, the late Doctor Hirini Melborne and Dr Richard Nunns.

Both are renowned for the revitalisation of taonga puoro or traditional Maori instruments.
