New Zealanders can expect warm, tropical conditions to continue this week with a good chance of thunderstorms for the North Island, the MetService says.
MetService meteorologist Tom Adams said the warm temperatures showed no signs of abating as tropical air lingered without a decent southerly surge to move it on.
"When you get a good southerly it's quite a refreshing change - you get a whole new cooler air mass over the country," he said.
"The air is very full of moisture, very warm, and also prone to thunderstorms, which is going to probably be the biggest feature over the next couple of the days."
The warm tropical air was likely to continue for the next 10 days into February.
Almost all of the North Island had a risk of severe thunderstorms tomorrow, he said.
There was also a risk of severe thunderstorms for Northland today.
Heating up
Temperatures will soar in most parts of the country this week with a high of 34 degrees Celsius forecast for Alexandra on Tuesday, MetService said.
Invercargill, which had its hottest day ever earlier this month, can expect a high of 29°C tomorrow.
Parts of the North Island can also expect hot, steamy temperatures with Masterton predicted to experience a high of 32°C later in the week.
Auckland starts the week off with showers but will reach a high of 28°C by Friday.
January's weather was bound to break some weather records, he said.
