New Zealand's Rescue Coordination Centre is helping in the search for three Tokelauan teenagers missing at sea since early on Wednesday.

The boys, aged 15 and 14, were last seen late on Tuesday night in the village of Atafu looking for fuel for their small aluminium boat.

Search and Rescue says the Coordination Centre is mapping out a search area and a Royal New Zealand Air Force Orion has been diverted to help.

The Samoan Navy is also offering assistance.
