A small group will gather in Wellington this weekend to mark 50 years since a protest campaign to end compulsory military training in New Zealand achieved its goal.
A form of conscription existed from 1909 until 1972, when it was abolished by Norman Kirk's incoming Labour Government - its election pledge driven in part by pressure from a group comprising protesters and military service resisters.
The founder of the group - Organisation to Halt Military Service - was a then 19-year-old Robert Reid.
He spoke to Corin Dann.
