A house has caught fire in the Lower Hutt suburb of Wainuiomata.

A local said the fire, at 3 Pollard Street about 6.50pm, caused smoke to roll slowly through the neighbourhood and could be smelled about 1km across the valley.
Several people from the neighbourhood gathered around as firefighters worked on the blaze.
The firefighters set up a roadblock nearby.
