By-election to be called in Cook Islands

16:36 pm on 28 August 2003

The Cook Islands faces another by-election after the Speaker of Parliament Sir Pupuke Robati has declared the seat of former MP Teina Bishop to be vacant.

Mr Bishop, the former MP for Arutanga/Reureu and Nikaupara on the island of Aitutaki, tendered his resignation to the Speaker about two weeks ago.

He resigned in protest over Aitutaki budget cuts.

No date has been set for the second by-election in the country.
