An 11-year-old child was among a group of eight youths arrested after allegedly trying to break into cars in the Auckland suburb of Westgate.
Waitematā West Inspector Jason Edwards said members of the group were seen attempting to break into a car around 2am today, before taking off in a vehicle.
The Eagle helicopter tracked them as they drove along Zefiro Drive at what police say was double the speed limit.
Officers then tried to stop the car and pursued it when it failed to stop.
Inspector Edwards said the youths abandoned the car on the North-Western Motorway near Huruhuru Road.
"All involved were apprehended a short time later without further incident."
Two males, aged 14 and 15, are due to appear in the Waitakere Youth Court this week.
Six others, including the 11-year-old, have been referred to Youth Aid.
"I would like to acknowledge the community's vigilance in reporting this suspicious activity to us, so we can respond," Inspector Edwards said.
He said the description provided helped the Eagle crew when they arrived in the area.
