The Palau House of Representatives has adopted a joint resolution urging President Johnson Toribiong to create a Climate Change Committee.
The Island Times reports the committee is to be made up of cabinet ministers and its task is to establish a clear policy and program of action for the country regarding climate change issues.
The resolution states that Palau has established itself in the international community as a champion for the environment, by establishing Palau's Protected Areas Network, and declaring its waters a shark sanctuary.
The House believes that Palau has begun to suffer the effects of climate change such as coral bleaching, coastal erosion, sea-level rise and taro patches being inundated with saltwater.
The resolution is now with the Senate for review.
