A large tyre fire which saw smoke billowing into the sky in North Canterbury is still burning.
Firefighters were called to Stanton Road and Mount Brown Road at about 6.30pm last night and contained the fire that risked spreading to another yard of 200,000 tyres.
Fire and Emergency let the fire burn to avoid using water and foam, which could lead to further environmental contamination from the runoff.
A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said the fire has been reduced to a few small patches.
A rural relief crew will be taking over later this morning.
The Hurunui District Council said debris from the fire could have landed in reservoirs so it turned off the water supply for the night.
Residents using the Racecourse bore are affected but those in Amberley are not.
The Council said it will decide later today if it is safe to turn back on the water supply. A spokesperson said due to the depth of the Racecourse Bore no contamination was suspected, but checks would be undertaken before it could come back online.
