A New Zealand Defence Force Hercules is to fly to Tonga with aid for the country's immediate needs after the massive volcanic eruption, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has confirmed.
An Air Force Orion is already carrying out an assessment from the air of the outer islands.
The C-130 would perform naval drops, with planning being done to enable that regardless of the status of the airport.
"I understand that on the ground of course that Tonga has also now by sea dispatched to the outer islands, Ardern said.
She said the C-130 was expected to fly today regardless, and would be able to meet immediate supply needs.
Defence Minister Peeni Henare said it was being ensured that the C-130 had the necessities on board.
He said Nuku'alofa was coming back into operation again, with power coming back in the area, but there was urgent need for things like water.
