The race, which featured 11 lead changes, was won by Japan's Takuma Sato, who started from pole position.

France's Sebastien Bourdais was third.

The result lifts Dixon to second in the overall standings after three races and continues his impressive start to the season which included a second place finish at the opening race in Florida and a 13th place finish in the second round in Texas.

"It was real hard in the dirty air there," Dixon said, after spending the majority of the race close behind Sato.

He credited his team's tyre strategy and was thankful the rubber held on as he kept Bourdais at bay on the final few laps.

"The tyres were crying quite a bit," Dixon said.

The next race is the Grand Prix of Long Beach on April 15th.
