Edgecumbe is still under water and its residents scattered as the Rangataiki river continues to sweep through the town.
It could be up to three days before the 1600 residents are allowed back into their homes with police blocking entrances to the town.
The swollen Rangataiki river smashed through a floodwall near the town yesterday morning.
The water was up to the windowsills of some houses, so boats were the only way around.
Surf life saving crews with inflatable rubber boats were drafted in to help rescue people.
And its not just Edgecombe thats affected, 1600 people are isolated in the general Ruatoki area in Te Urewera, and another 600 in the Ruatahuna - Minginui area.
We cross to our reporters Sharon Brett Kelly and Zac Fleming for the latest from the scene.
