Boy racer attack akin to gang terrorism: Mayor

18:07 pm on 28 May 2009

Christchurch mayor Bob Parker has likened a boy racer attack on a security guard to gang terrorism.

Mr Parker likened the city's boy racer problem to Wanganui's gang issues.

He says the Government must push through new legislation strengthening police and local authority powers to clamp down on illegal street racing before someone is killed.

An Aviation Security Service officer says she was set upon by about 100 boy racers while carrying out a routine check of facilities near the airport on Wednesday night.

ASS general manager Mark Everitt says the woman's clearly marked vehicle was blocked by cars and people at about 10.30pm.

Three of the car's windows were smashed, including the driver's.

The woman was covered in broken glass but managed to escape.

The incident is the second large-scale boy racer attack to occur in Christchurch.

Bottles were hurled at a police officer and an air rifle fired in an incident involving about 300 boy racers in January.
