Auckland Council and the government have agreed to work together on boosting home building in the city.
Cabinet Ministers Phil Twyford and Jenny Salesa committed to co-operation this morning during a meeting of the Housing Taskforce formed by mayor Phil Goff.
The year-old taskforce is focusing on streamlining consents, and maximising new building technology so homes can be built faster.
The taskforce expects to report on progress later this year.
A recent consultants review found the council's performance on completing building and resource consents appeared to have fallen over past years.
Latest data shows just 8000 homes were completed in Auckland last year, when its estimated 14,000 are needed annually to make inroads into its housing shortage.
