Tomato grower spared by quake

A Canterbury tomato grower believes he got off fairly lightly in Saturday's earthquake, despite some structural damage to his glasshouse.

Horticulture New Zealand says growers in the Canterbury region have mostly been spared serious damage to crops, plant and machinery. It says there have been only a few reports of broken glass in glasshouses.

Springston grower Tony Norton, who has more than a hectare of tomatoes under glass, says he was expecting the worst when the magnitude 7.1 quake occurred, but his growing operation held up pretty well.

Some glass was smashed and a few water pipes were broken.

However, Mr Norton adds that the aftershocks have been very unnerving.
