The number of serious youth offenders has dropped by seven percent to just over a thousand.

This is in the first lot of quarterly reporting on key performance measures from Oranga Tamariki.

It said this equated to being over a third of the way towards the government's target of 15 percent fewer youth offenders by 2030.

The new report noted that the first pilot boot camp was now being evaluated.

It also showed Oranga Tamariki fell short of addressing very urgent reports on time, at 89 percent against a 95 percent goal.

But it hit the target of social workers visiting children enough - 95 percent saw them at least once in the last eight weeks.

Caregivers gave mostly good feedback about social workers but were less satisfied with Oranga Tamariki itself.

Complaints were handle properly in only half of the cases against it.

"We are developing a performance improvement plan to enable uplift of standards in complaint responses across the new regional structure," OT said.

This, and some other measures in the report, set a baseline to measure progress against, Children's Minister Karen Chhour said.
