A multi-car crash has closed the Auckland motorway southbound from Gilles Ave, Newmarket.

Police said the serious crash happened about 8.10pm.
One person died in the two-car crash, police said.
A second person with serious injuries has been taken to hospital .
Southbound motorists are being diverted off the motorway at Gillies Ave and back on at Greenlane, while crash investigators examine the scene.
