Candlelit vigil held for Maggie Watson

More than 30 people have gathered for a candlelit vigil outside the Auckland home where a young girl was found dead.

The body of Maggie Renee Watson, who was four, was found at her home in the suburb of Onehunga last Friday.

The police were called by the girl's mother, and they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the death.

Neighbours and friends from the dead girl's church lined the fence of her still cordoned-off home with candles. Many of them were overcome with tears.

The vigil's organiser, Des Gilmore, who is a neighbour and family friend, said the quiet and tight community was still in shock.

'Artistic, self-confident, caring'

A message from Maggie's overseas-based grandparents was read out.

They said they would miss her tremendously, and that she was an artistic, self-confident and caring child.

The girl's immediate neighbour, Avia Amosa, said the mother and daughter had no family in New Zealand.

He said they were friendly, and Maggie often played with his children.
