Consultation for possible new flag underway

11:58 am on 5 May 2015

The public can begin to have its say on a possible new flag from today.

The Flag Consideration Project, which is leading the consultation, said people would be able to share their opinion on a flag change online and at community meetings and hui being held across the country.

The first of the meetings to discuss what the flag should signify about New Zealand, start in Christchurch on Saturday 16 May.

Emeritus Professor John Burrows, chair the Flag Consideration Panel, hoped the meetings and online discussion would give it an insight into what design is favoured should voters decide it is time for a change.

There will be two postal referendums held by the Government - the first in November to shortlist four flag alternatives, and another vote in March next year to decide between the chosen alternative flag and the current one.
