The Caledonia Together Party has issued a statement, saying the search of its Congress office in Noumea follows allegations of campaign funding irregularities in connection with last year's French legislative elections.

The party said the allegations had earlier been lodged by the losing candidates with the control commission which had however approved the party's accounts.

It said the latest action is just the continuation of judicial procedure pushed by the party's political rivals ahead of May's provincial elections.

Reports said the investigators removed documents from the building.

Caledonia Together won both of New Caledonia's seats in the French National Assembly.
