A volcanologist says there may be further eruptions on White Island over the next 16 months.
The Bay of Plenty volcano last erupted on 11 October this year, throwing mud and steam into the air.
GNS Science volcanologist Brad Scott says there has been no activity since then, but instability may continue.
GNS has lowered the Volcanic Alert Level to 1 and will continue to monitor the volcano.
Mr Scott says it is at an unpredictable stage and people should be careful when visiting White Island.
