09:18 am on 29 August 2011

New Zealand's Valerie Adams needed just one throw to qualify for the women's shot put final of the shot put at the athletics world championships in athletics at Daegu in South Korea.

The Olympic and two time world champion put the shot out to 19.79 metres, well past the qualifying mark of 18.65 metres.

Her arch rival Nadzeya Ostapchuk of Belarus also qualified with her first attempt of 19.11 metres but trails China's Gong Lijiao and Germany's Christina Swanitz.

But on the track Nikki Hamblin clipped the heel of a runner who had slowed slightly in front of her and fell heavily in her 1500 metres race. She still has the 800 metres though.

And decathlete Brent Newdick is 19th going into the pole vault after finishing seventh in his 110 metres hurdles heat and 12th in the discus.
