Vanuatu's Greens want an Upper House

16:06 pm on 1 May 2002

Vanuatu's Green Party wants an upper house giving the chiefs power to veto legislation.

The Greens are one of several new parties contesting tomorrow's general election and their leader, Moana Carcasses, says they expect to win six of the fifty-two seats.

He says they are a progressive Green movement in favour of controlled development.

Mr Carcasses says the chiefs know what is environmentally sound so the Greens want to return to them some of their customary powers through the establishment of a senate.

"Why they have the right to say something is simply because they are living with that people everyday, they know exactly what grass roots need and what is their request."
