Solomons commemorates Gizo tsunami

In Solomon Islands, a church service and medal presentations are being held in Gizo town to commemorate the earthquake and tsunami that destroyed a large part of the Western Province.

Governor General Sir Nathaniel Waena is guest in a church service and will also give out medals to those recommended as having conducted themselves bravely.

The tsunami hit on April 2nd last year killed 52 people and destroyed thousands of homes and hundreds of villages.

In parliament today, the Prime Minister Derek Sikua paid tribute to those who lost properties and families who lost loved ones.

A church service is being held later today in Honiara to commemorate the disaster.
