Christchurch Earthquake

First of Christchurch roadshows held

04:47 am on 24 August 2011

A roadshow on plans to rebuild earthquake-hit Christchurch has made the first of nine appearances throughout the city.

It features about a dozen large artists' impressions of what the central city might look like, with descriptions.

Feedback was mainly positive, with most people pleased about the plan's green and people-friendly focus.

However, one of the most contentious subjects was transport.

Resident Murray Innes says a proposed $400 million light rail system is too expensive and Christchurch should expand on the effective bus service it had before the quake on 22 February.

Planners who helped create the draft plan were there to answer the public's questions.

The roadshow will be held for a fortnight.
