A record drug seizure in Papua New Guinea means other countries around the Pacific will need to be extra vigilant in case their countries become routes for illegal drugs.

Last Friday PNG police seized more than half a tonne of cocaine - with a street value estimated at NZ$87 million - allegedly destined for Australia.

The police says the drugs were to be transported aboard a light plane but it crashed outside of Port Moresby last weekend.
