American Samoa to stop night-time sports following violence

07:45 am on 23 September 2013

The American Samoa Department of Education says all school sports will resume within weeks, and all activities will now be held during daylight hours, after ongoing violence at sports games.

The Governor Lolo Matalasi Moliga has called a community-wide meeting on Monday to discuss ways to resolve the continuous outbreak of sports competition related violence.

The Director of the Department, Vaitinasa Dr Salu Hunkin-Finau, says a task force will be formed to meet with each school to re-emphasise the gravity of the incidents, and that those responsible will be held accountable through the law.

She says high school sports will resume once the issues have been resolved legally, and with the efforts of the community partnership to stop the violence.
