French ministry declines comment on thyroid link in nuclear tests

12:23 pm on 7 August 2006

The French defence ministry has declined to comment on the findings of a researcher who established a link between the French nuclear weapons tests and thyroid cancer cases among women in French Polynesia.

The researcher of INSERM, Florent de Vathaire, sent a letter about his findings to the top nuclear safety official.

He has also asked the defence ministry to release its reports on the tests.

But the ministry says it will only comment once the findings have been published in a scientific journal.

It says before commenting, it will seek the views of the interministerial liaision committee in charge of the coordination of the follow-up of the nuclear tests.

France has said its atomic tests were clean and has refused to acknowledge any detrimental effects on human health.
