Egyptian gas pipeline blown up

17:50 pm on 28 November 2011

A gas pipeline in Egypt which supplies to Jordan and Israel was blown up on Monday.

The explosion in the Sinai desert is the ninth such attack since President Hosni Mubarak was deposed on 11 February. Saboteurs are thought to be responsible.

Egypt supplies Israel with nearly half its gas under a heavily-criticised deal agreed to by Mr Mubarak.

The government said earlier in November that it would tighten security measures along the pipeline by installing alarm devices and recruiting security patrols from Bedouin tribesmen, Reuters reports.

Parliamentary elections are due to begin on Monday. The election timetable lasts until March 2012 and covers two houses of parliament.
