Final plea for farmers to join wool co-operative

13:23 pm on 8 February 2011

A proposed farmer wool co-operative is making a last ditch plea for farmers to sign up.

The board of Wool Partners Co-operative is publishing a letter on Tuesday urging strong wool growers to commit to the company before next week.

It says if they do not, the co-operative will not succeed.

Wool Partners says it needs to raise $55 million to start up and have farmers committed to supplying nearly half of the strong wool clip.

It has already extended its share offer three times but says its latest deadline of 16 February will be the final one.

Chairman Jeff Grant says there has been a strong take-up of the share offer, which amounts to the largest voluntary capital raising seen in the wool industry.

However he says the $35 million raised so far is still not enough.

He says there is no plan B if the company's share offer falls over next week.

Mr Grant says the offer is an opportunity for growers to take control of their industry and adopt the co-operative model which has worked so well in the dairy and kiwifruit industries.

Wool Partners has been battling a sustained campaign by wool exporters, brokers and merchants who oppose the venture.
