Anti UN demonstrations spread with cholera in Haiti

15:46 pm on 19 November 2010

Protests linked to the outbreak of cholera in Haiti have spread to parts of the capital, Port-au-Prince.

Some Haitians have blamed United Nations peacekeepers from Nepal for bringing the disease into the country - a claim the UN denies.

Police fired tear gas as demonstrators set up barricades and threw rocks at UN vehicles on Thursday.

Sporadic gunfire could also be heard in the streets of Port-au-Prince, which was devastated by an earthquake in January.

Clashes on Monday between residents and UN troops in the north left two people dead.

Cholera is present in all 10 of Haiti's regions. About 1100 people have died from the disease since it emerged in the country last month.
