Say the name Anurag Kashyap in South Asian circles and you’ll likely find some star struck fans.
The prominent Indian filmmaker will be in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland this week for an intimate conversation about his work, his tenacious storytelling and the moments which have shaped his career.
Kashyap is a pioneer of India’s independent filmmaking scene and broke in with his crime drama Satya in 1998. The film has been named by CNN as one of the 100 greatest Indian films of all time. The Indian film industry is prolific producing more than 1500 movies each year. Kashyap rejected traditional Bollywood stories and conventions, choosing instead to focus on the complicated and contradictory parts of Indian society.
Kashyap remains a strong advocate for creative freedom and artistic expression. He has been awarded the Ordre des Arts es det Lettres (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters) by the Government of France and the Yash Bharati Award by the Government of Uttar Pradesh for his contributions to the industry.
Aotearoa academic and filmmaker Shuchi Kothari will be holding the conversation with Kashyap and she speaks to Culture 101 about his trailblazing style and why he’s a big deal.
Satellites supports and increases the visibility of Asian artists in Aotearoa and will be bringing Kashyap to New Zealand to meet and connect with practitioners in New Zealand.
Anurag Kashyap: In Conversation will be held on Wednesday 17 April at Q Theatre in Auckland. Tickets are still available.
