FRANZ countries reaffirm relief commitment

06:39 am on 3 December 2002

France, Australia and New Zealand have reaffirmed that they will continue to work together to provide disaster relief in case of an emergency in Pacific Islands countries.

The three partners in the so-called FRANZ group met in Wellington to review and strengthen their assistance scheme which was set up ten years ago.

The talks took into account recent changes in the three countries' systems and looked at ways of providing a shared response to any emergency that may arise during the cyclone season.

The FRANZ group cited its assistance after last January's cyclone in Tonga as a recent example of its co-operation.

The review was attended by senior New Zealand, Australian and French officials, including the French high commissioners in New Caledonia and French Polynesia.
