A low-budget British rag-to-riches movie set in Mumbai has swept the British Academy Film Awards in London.

Slumdog Millionaire won best film, best director and five other categories including best adapted screenplay, best music, cinematography and sound.

The movie won four awards at the Golden Globes in January, including best drama.

Slumdog Millionaire is nominated for 10 Oscars. The event takes place on 22 February on Los Angeles.

Kate Winslet won best actress for her role as a former concentration camp guard in The Reader. It is the second time she has won a Bafta, having previously been named best supporting actress for Sense and Sensibility in 1995.

Mickey Rourke won best actor for his portrayal of a washed-up professional athlete in The Wrestler.

Both Winslet and Rourke won Golden Globes for their performances and are nominated for Oscars.

Penelope Cruz was named best supporting actress for Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

Another award for Ledger

As expected, Heath Ledger was named best supporting actor for playing The Joker in the latest Batman movie The Dark Knight.

Ledger, who died of an accidental drug overdose last year, was awarded Golden Globe and has been nominated for an Oscar.

In Bruges won the award for original screenplay.

Pinewood and Shepperton Studios received an award for outstanding contribution to cinema.

The studios have a heritage dating back nearly 75 years with more than 1500 films made there, including The African Queen, Dr Strangelove and Superman.
