Woods still Open favourite

07:50 am on 16 July 2013

The British Open golf championship starting on Thursday night at Muirfield in Scotland will be Tiger Woods' first tournament since last month's US Open, but the world number one remains the perennial favourite.

Woods is still taking painkillers and having treatment for an injury to his left elbow which was aggravated during the US Open.

He'll be hoping for a better result on his second attempt at Muirfield - in 2002 a North Sea storm blew away his title hopes when he shot an 81 in the third round, to date the worst score of his professional career.

Woods will play the first two rounds alongside Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell and the 2010 Open champion Louis Oosthuizen of South Africa.

The only New Zealander in the field is Mark Brown.
