A boy who died after being trapped upside down in a waterfall will be farewelled this weekend at a service on his family farm in North Otago.
Dion Latta had been exploring the Motatapu Gorge behind Glendhu Bay in Wanaka with a group of friends on Sunday evening when his foot got stuck in the top of the waterfall and he was forced upside down by the strong flow of water.
Rescuers freed him after three hours but the 15-year-old had severe hypothermia and later died at Dunedin Hospital.
A funeral notice in the Otago Daily Times says a service will be held by the family at Nenthorn Valley in North Otago on Saturday.
The Latta family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Wanaka Search and Rescue.
