Two people are in hospital with serious injuries following a dairy robbery which saw tobacco and cash stolen.

Police said officers were investigating the aggravated robbery on Mount Albert Road that was reported around 4.30pm on Wednesday.

"Two people had been seriously assaulted and were taken to hospital with moderate injuries," police said in a statement.

"It is understood offenders have attacked the victims and taken tobacco and cash before leaving the area."

Officers were immediately sent to the area but those involved are yet to be located.

According to the New Zealand Herald, the offenders were carrying hammers and the injured people were the dairy owner's wife and a customer.

The robbery took place at Jyotis Dairy, it said.

Jyotis Dairy is not far from Rose Cottage Superette where dairy worker Janak Patel was killed in November last year.

Patel's death caused nationwide outrage and protests were held across the country where many dairy owners shut up shop to take part.

Police asked anyone who may have witnessed the robbery this afternoon or has information that could assist them, call 105 and quote file number P055229454.
